Analysing The Success Of Your SEO Keywords

By Stewart M. Russell

Knowing your keyword ranking is one of the most important aspects of ensuring your website is optimised for the search engines in the most effective way possible. One of the biggest mistakes that many website owners make is to assume that by stuffing their website full of relevant keywords, by some miraculous chance of fortune their website will appear high up Google's results page. Unfortunately this is not the case, and it is unwise to leave your choice of keywords to mere chance.

A few years ago it would certainly be true to suggest that one of the most successful ways of ensuring your website was promoted highly on Google is to stuff your website full of specific keywords, and include those keywords in areas such as the meta tags. This is no longer the case, and with Google's new latent semantic indexing there is far more importance attached to the overall contextual meaning of the website, rather than on a handful of key words.

The development of Google's semantic algorithms has caused a great deal of misunderstanding and bad advice, with many people now believing that it is more important to focus on context than it is to consider the use of key words. However, to believe this is to seriously confuse the concept of stuffing your website full of key words and optimising your website for a specific keyword phrase.

If your website is all about selling and repairing watches, then it is certainly important to make sure that as much of the content of your website as possible uses key words and phrases which relate to the subject of watches, and which helps to build up a broad contextual picture for Google. But this is only the first stage in optimising your website fully.

It is very easy to become embroiled with specific aspects of search engine optimisation and forget exactly what the purpose of such effort is for. Almost certainly you will appreciate that you are trying to make sure that your website is as high up the results pages as possible. But it is also very easy to forget that search results pages do not even exist until potential customers carry out a specific search. Your task is to make sure you understand exactly what it is those customers are searching for, in order to maximise the relevance of your site.

There are a number of tools available on the Internet to help you identify the most popular searches for particular topics. Even Google itself is able to help you here with its own keyword tools. Once you understand the key words being used by potential customers, you are able to maximise the relevant use of those keywords within your own website .

But how do you know whether all that hard work has paid off? If your sales figures suddenly rocket skywards, then that's a pretty good indication. It is also hopelessly optimistic, and in the short term it will be important for you to be able to analyse where your own website is situated in the search engine results for specific keyword searches.

There are several tools available which will help you to identify your ranking, but for sheer speed and efficiency the one that I would recommend is the key phrase ranking tool at cheekygreenmonkey.com. By entering your chosen key word or phrase, and selecting the domain you would like to analyse, their tool will quickly inform you of exactly your position within the search results. You should aim to be well within the top 20 or 30 of these, in order for your website to have any chance of being found. - 16655
